Drinking cocaine was made possible in September of last year, but was recently put to rest this month. This symbolically named energy drink was pulled from the store shelf due to its controversy name. Even though we all know that cocaine gives you energy boost making it an ideal name for a power drink, it was worried by the Food and Drug Administration that it may glorify the drug. It letter the Cocaine Energy Drink makers received, the FDA warned that the marketing of a drink as a street drug alternative and a dietary supplement was potential illegal. Although the FDA did not directly order the product taken off the shelf, but possible legal action was enough to cause change within this new company. My favorite quote comes from the Attorney General Richard Blumenthal who said, “Our goal is to literally flush Cocaine down the drain across the nation.”

Cocaine drinks marketing slogans were very catchy, “Speed in a Can,” “Liquid Cocaine” and “Cocaine – Instant Rush.” Even though this drink contains no illegal substances, unfortunately, their intent was to market the product as a legal alternative. They went as far as to compare it to how celibacy is an alternative premarital sex. HUH!? All I heard was sex and cocaine.

Fans of Cocaine are fighting for this energy drink on MySpace.com which I am sure is catching a lot of eyes. One interesting fact is that a lawyer representing Coca-Cola who announced there may be some copyright infringement on a new product that they are planning to market. Coca Cola used to contain Cocaine so maybe they will be starting a new line-up featuring their original recipe.
