Man jailed over speed crash death

The son of a Russian billionaire has been jailed for six and a half years for killing a friend in a car crash.

Ivan Mazour, of Fulham, was driving at nearly 90mph when his sports car crashed into a lamppost killing the front seat passenger Charlie Green, 21.

Southwark Crown Court heard Mazour, whose father is also called Ivan, had smoked cannabis and may have been three times above the drink drive limit.

He and all five passengers were seriously injured.

‘Genuinely shocked’

The court was told Mazour’s Mitsubishi Evolution VIII hurtled across the central reservation in London’s Piccadilly Underpass in November 2005 and crashed into a BMW head on.

He had spent the evening drinking, smoking cannabis, partying and clubbing in London’s West End.

He ignored requests to slow down and not to drive at all.

Last week, he admitted causing death by dangerous driving, just moments before he was due to stand trial.

Judge Anthony Pitts said photographs of the crash were so severe they were reminiscent of the car crash that killed Dianna, Princess of Wales in Paris.

Six people were injured in the crash

Michael Austin-Smith, QC, prosecuting, said evidence from his friends showed Mazour had been in a mood to push his Mitsubishi, which had a personalised number plate, to its acceleration limit.

Scientific analysis revealed he had drunk the equivalent of 13 whiskies and was driving at a “greatly excessive” speed.

His victim’s parents and fiancee listened from the jury box as they heard the judge say that the “tragedy” fell into “the most serious culpability category”.

He said he accepted Mazour had been “genuinely shocked to the core of your being by this accident and are truly remorseful”.

But he said prison was inevitable and that Mazour would be disqualified from driving for eight years and would have to pass an extended test before being allowed back on the roads.

Mazour’s father, Ivan Mazour Snr, was in the ranks of Russia’s super-rich following the privatization of the country’s energy industry.
